Who cares?
Well, Crap, I guess I do.

It all started by watching the movie “Wasted! The Story of Food Waste” with my family years ago. To be honest I was so upset, and being a researcher, decided that it couldn’t all be true. I started reading about the problem. After months of my husband coming home to me ranting about the facts I was finding about food waste, recycling, and garbage in general, he looked at me and said, “You can either do something about it or be quiet. I’m tired of getting yelled at…” He has quite the way with words to garner my attention.

And so it began….

ranting to anyone that would listen

meeting with so many amazing people to ask them  about what is going on in Colorado,

time spent in school cafeterias, and

compiling resources and information about waste reduction…

All of that has lead to this website, some resources for teachers, and the upcoming publication of a book on composting for kids. This book is co-authored with one of the best Montessori teachers of all time- Jill Doyle! You gotta check it out.

I’ve come to realize that what I was looking for was a compiled, easy to read information outlet on waste reduction. That’s what  this website is trying to become.

Along the way I’ve learned a lot about El Paso County and Colorado, but most of the information is universal. I’m going to try to share it for your use. Hopefully, we can help each other to make our homes and communities better places.

Thanks for reading. Please reach out to share your reduction tips or if you find any errors.

Knowledge is power and I was tired of being ignorant.

Mary Mauzy, MPH, PhD

I grew up in Montana and was raised (gladly) in a family that really didn’t know how to throw things away… then I took it to the next level. I have a passion for waste reduction and shudder whenever something is going “in the trash.”

I received a Bachelors in Science (Biotechnology) from Montana State University, Bozeman, before completing a Master in Public Health (Epidemiology) and PhD (Comparative and Molecular Biosciences) from the University of Minnesota, Twin Cities. You can take my opinion as just that, an opinion, but when it comes to molecular biology I might know a thing or two…
